Here's my first two-colour freezer paper project, with a step-by-step guide that you can follow yourselves.
This is not in fact a two-colour stencil. I decided to stencil the first colour, then to paint the second colour with a brush..[Update: I've done a tutorial for a three-colour stencil here] Here's what I did:
1. Doodled my giraffe and cut it out with a craft knife.
1a. Found a clean shirt! (I've been having trouble with this step here at Camp Bellgirl)
2. Ironed a piece of freezer paper on the underside of where the stencil would go. Then I ironed my stencil lightly to stick it to the t-shirt.
3. Mixed up a colour using Jo Sonja Acrylic Craft Paints, then added an equal amount of Jo Sonja Textile Medium.
4. Painted my stencil using a sponge brush. Last time I used a stencil brush, but I think this sponge gave better coverage. This paint needs to soak into the fabric, so it's good to do a couple of applications or it may look patchy.
5. Mixed a contrasting colour. Then, leaving the freezer paper in place, I painted on the details with a fine brush.
6. Waited for stencil to dry, then carefully peeled away paper.
7. Covered design with a cloth; ironed with hot iron for about 30 seconds. Hallelujah, giraffe!
Next time I'll try printing a two-colour design using two stencils. This one worked well but it doesn't look as "stencilly" as it might.
UPDATE: I've now done a three colour stencil tutorial using three layers of freezer paper, see here: http://bellgirl.com.au/2009/07/tutorial-three-colour-freezer-paper.html

Adorable! I'll have to let Leah at the blog Knitting Giraffe know about this... she'd love it.
oh it worked so well...great tip about the freezer paper underneath...
Wow - that looks fantastic! You must be really pleased with how it turned out. I really like the design and the colours that you have used.
I haven't yet tried stencilling onto a knit, so I think the tip about using a sponge sounds good. (I've been using a paint brush on the weave fabric). I must head off and get myself some of that textile medium you have been using ... I think it will be a bit cheaper than the Speedball ink I have been using and would allow me to mix your own colours. Nice!
Can't wait to see your two-toned stencil next week!
Wow, I love your giraffe! Two tone too.. I'm so impressed!
Oh, and in reply to your comment on frogspawn sago - while on "taste sensation" mission a little while ago, I *did* find a frog oviduct and red bean dessert in my local asian grocer!! So gross!
Thanks for dropping by ;-)
Hi, SO SO SO excited to find your blog. I have been wanting to try stencilling for ages but couldn't come at all the screen, squeegie etc that you need. Sorry to be so daft but what exactly is freezer paper? Is it non-stick baking paper? Is it from the supermarket or is it a special crafty thing? Thanks so much
