Veg About- join in!

It's vegie planting season at Camp Bellgirl, and I'm starting a regular feature on my potted patch. Do you veg too? Or are herbs more your line? Let me know if you'd like to join me, I'll make a list in my sidebar.

Water restrictions around Australia are changing the way we garden, and this year I'm trying something new with my vegies. Instead of growing them in soil, I'm using a new self-watering trough called "Greensmart". The trough has a water reservoir which is supposed to use at least 60% less water, and keep the pot moist for up to 10 days. Here's my list of anticipated pros and cons- we'll see how they perform over the season.

Pro:
  • up to ten days between watering
  • less water lost through evaporation
  • fewer problems with mildew
  • Constant moisture means no growth setbacks and healthier plants
Con:
  • uses potting mix, not my homemade compost
  • constant moisture is not suitable for all plants at all stages
  • less or no soil life in potting mix
  • Not suitable for untreated grey water- I don't use this on vegies anyway, but it would mean that the pot could probably not be used in stage four water restrictions.
In my next post I'll introduce you to the pots and their contents. The Bug will also be participating, using a traditional self-watering pot for comparison.

If you'd like to put a copy of the Captain Jack Sparrowgrass button on your sidebar, you can pick up a copy here: http://bellgirl.com.au/2008/11/veg-about-button.html

Hi Just followed the link from my blog..glad I did!
we (the kids and I) just started up a hydroponic box of plants and I'm happy to say they are looking very healthy, but your trough looks much nicer than our tub......veggie envy?

I was commiserating with some friends in the midwest section of the US about the crops. The entire cherry crop...nada in 2008. Tomatoes never ripened but got blossom rot.

I keep a lot of herbs over the winter outside, and usually force some lemon grass in water. Fun to look at.

Hey Bellgirl,

Despite a lot of my vegies being munched this year by a mystery critter, my tomatoes are coming up quite strongly, and some cucmbers have self-seeded from the compost in my window boxes.

I'd love to beg-about with you - count me in!

Ooh I'd love to join! I've already made a few posts about our veggie patch and I have a big one planned for this weekend as we're over-run with peas from the pea-straw which is kind of cool!!

Hi, I'd love to join your Veg About- it will help with motivation I'm sure.

BTW, in Geelong we are on stage 4 restrictions and there are still things you can do. Get your buckets and bins under the eaves and spouts EVERY time it rains. Also catch the clean water in your house that would normally go down the drain, like waiting for the hot water to come through or even water you cook vegies, rice & pasta in. That's all safe for vegies. Every little bit helps.
