A Whirl of Butterflies

These purple flowers remind me of butterflies in flight. In fact, they attract tiny brown and blue butterflies too, so when I go out in the morning the garden is awhirl!

They're called Purple Flag Irises, and they came from a local council nursery. They are indigenous to our area, and because they are local natives, they are well-suited to survive on local rainfall.

Here's hoping, anyway, because we're headed for severe water restrictions this year. I wonder, if the flowers die, what will happen to the butterflies?

What a pretty plant. I'm looking for a few more hardy types to plant out in the garden. It futile planting out all those thirsty annuals that I used to love so much!

Council nursery? Where? Sounds like something worth checking out...

They're lovely! I love those little butterflies too.
We've been dismayed by just how dry everything is already, at the very beginning of November. Looks as though it's going to be another hot and parched summer..... I hope we don't lose too many more beautiful landscapes/ecosystems :-(

It looks like you have some natives fairly well established, they should make it through a dry summer.

My elderly German neighbour recently asked me why I bothered planting natives as "no one would even know you had made an effort in the garden - it looks like the bush out the back". The point exactly!

I really love your stamp set.. I have quite a little collection of vintage french school stamps here, I love them but might have some custom ones made up as pressies, nice idea...

Hey, have just stumbled on your blog - love it! I love spending time in my garden too plucking the weeds out & growing vegies & great indigenous plants. I was so not a green thumb, but have been amazed at how addicted I have got over the last 15 years. Nothing excites me more than stitching quietly in the garden watching the birds eating the seeds! Nice to meet ya!
