The Elusive Patch

Here's a predicament that may sound familiar. I've cut out all the pieces for my next quilt, but one of them just doesn't look quite right.

To be more specific, it looks like a washed out old pair of pyjamas. Can you see the piece I mean? No need to be tactful, yes it's right there in the middle. Close up it's all the right colours, but in context it looks very daggy.

I'm planning to hand quilt in red stripes, so I'm wanting something with a bit of red in it so that it doesn't look too strange.

If you have any suggestions let me know, and stay tuned for my patch screen tests.

hiya. I think it depends on the style you're going for. If you want a patchy, more traditional style then I think the stripes are perfect because it has the feel of when quilts were made of pieces of cloth or clothes that would now days just be thrown out. It gives a quilt a really homely vibe (but that may just be my strange mind at work). On the other hand, if you want the modern, crisp look where there is a place for every piece and every piece in its place organised style then take out the stripes.

I personally love the stripes, but that's just me and you have to go with your own gut.

good luck with it all, looking forward to seeing updates :)

Mm, I'm with Katie: I quote like the stripes. I did do a baby quilt once that I felt had the same issue, so I appliqued a white bunny outline onto the 'quieter' piece. Worked a treat.

Do you have any of the bold flowers left over? If you fussy cut one and appliqued it in the centre of the striped piece, it would really pop.

Go with your instincts. If its annoying you now, it will annoy you in the finished piece.
