"Hey Jude" is not my favorite Beatles song. It's monotonous four-minute coda makes my eyes droop and my head nod. Which is why I decided to play it to the Bug on a recent road trip when I wanted him to sleep in the car.As we pulled out of Apollo Bay I selected the track and put it on a loop.
After an hour, travelling through the Otway Ranges, he was rocking in his seat, happily singing "La la la LA LA LA LA hay joo!".
By the time we got to Geelong we'd changed the track and moved on to "Love Me Do" with two-part harmonies ("No Mummy, I be Paul, you be John!").
And weeks later, in the early hours of the morning, I am often the woken by the strains of "LA LA LA LA hay joo!".
I think this is why it's called a refrain.
